Yes, pun intended. Corny I know.
One of the areas we like to camp and hike has an abundant amount of mustangs (wild horses). We always enjoy seeing them and identifying the different herds looking for any new stallions. One of our early videos has some of them in it. (Hint, check out the video) https://youtu.be/hixgS-3db8U
One night while camping we went nite-walking in particular free hiking finding our own way (the most fun in my opinion), we hear what we’re sure are horses somewhere ahead in the trees and brush. Visibility was poor it was a no moon night with clouds. I stopped to take off one of the pvs-14’s I had dual mounted to attach it to my camera. We wanted to get them on video and wifey was creeping up slowly with the NVD’s to locate them while I was finger banging both devices in the dark hurrying to finish and catch up. I didn’t want to use visible light. The dog was with her and they were maybe 75 meters ahead. They found them all right! I knew this because the herd panicked and ran with the sound of their hooves deafening. I’m standing there holding my camera and pvs-14 in each hand with my solo head mounted -14 out of focus because I set it for up close to attach the camera. All I could think was “Fuck, this was a really stupid idea we‘re going to get trampled!”
I couldn’t tell which way the herd was going and yelled “White light! White light! Let them know where you are!” They were gone leaving a cloud of dirt behind. We never saw them because luckily they ran the other way. Lucky us.
I ran over to the wife and dog to make sure they were okay. She flips up her NVD’s, looks at me with saucers for eyeballs and yells “Holy shit!” at which point we both started laughing so hard we had tears in our eyes.
We knew better and still did it. We thought we’d see them first. Lesson learned. Don’t ever spook animals that can hurt you or worse!
